Case Study:
Induction/Onboarding Training Project

Refreshing A Welcome Day Orientation and Skill Induction

The Challenge

Our client, a leading entertainment organisation with properties in Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sydney, faced significant inconsistencies in their new starter orientation and their skill induction for food and beverage training.

The existing training differed across sites in agenda, messaging, and design, resulting in passive learning experiences, long seat times, and varied resource quality.

Guest speaker reliance placed high demands on key personnel, and the programs often became overloaded with compliance content rather than focusing on what was truly critical for new starters.

The challenge was to design an engaging, interactive, and unified experience that reflected our client’s Purpose, Values, and Principles (PVP), created a memorable first impression, and effectively prepared new team members for their roles across all locations.

Our Approach

Our approach began with a thorough discovery phase, engaging key stakeholders from across the organisation to identify essential content and non-negotiable takeaways for new starters. Through consultation and feedback, we distilled the training to focus on actionable, valuable information at the early stage of the employee journey.

We designed three single-day, face-to-face programs: a Welcome Day Orientation, a Food & Beverage Onboarding, and an interactive Skills session. These experiences were underpinned by our client’s new Purpose, Values, and Principles (PVP), and included a consistent structure for all properties.

Our instructional design team developed comprehensive facilitator guides, engaging presentation decks, and supporting resources—such as real-world scenario activities and job aids—ensuring planned interactions every 2-3 minutes to maintain engagement. Customised templates and graphical elements, created in collaboration with our client’s marketing and L&D teams, ensured a cohesive and branded experience.

Outcomes

The refreshed programs garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback from both participants and facilitators.

A survey of 525 Welcome Day attendees showed that 94% agreed the information was relevant, clear, and concise, and 99% said the day met their expectations. Interactive activities centred on our client’s Purpose, Values, and Principles (PVP) received the highest praise, with over 80% strongly agreeing on their value.

For the Food & Beverage Onboarding and Skills sessions, over 900 participants reported that the training was very helpful, easy to understand, and well-timed. Comments highlighted the interactive, fun, and practical nature of the sessions, with participants noting increased confidence and readiness for their roles. Facilitators appreciated the ease of session delivery, the ability to assess learner knowledge, and the opportunity for real skill practice and feedback.

Conclusion

By partnering closely with our client and focusing on interactive, targeted learning, we delivered a unified onboarding experience that set the right tone from day one. The programs now consistently reflect our client’s Purpose, Values, and Principles, provide practical, engaging learning opportunities, and create a strong, positive first impression for new starters across all properties.

The success of this project demonstrates the impact of intentional design, stakeholder collaboration, and high-quality resources in transforming induction and onboarding into a memorable, effective experience.
