Case Study:
Leadership Training in Employment Obligations

Ensuring leaders meet their obligations when it comes to managing employee entitlements

The Challenge

Our client sought a refresh of their training in employment obligations, aiming to address substantial changes in employment obligations and improve leader awareness.

The project required a module optimised for mobile delivery, supporting access anytime, anywhere, and designed to function seamlessly in both mobile and desktop environments—despite no existing LMS for mobile.

The challenge included converting complex, compliance-heavy content into scenario-driven learning, maintaining a consistent level of interactivity and functionality across devices, and ensuring leaders could see the relevance of the material to their roles. Additional requirements were a strict 30-minute module duration and the inclusion of a pre-assessment to help learners focus only on areas needing support.

Our Approach

The project team collaborated closely with Subject Matter Experts to identify critical learning objectives and distil content to what’s essential for leaders.

A scenario-driven design was adopted, following a single character (Alex) through realistic decision-making situations. The module was broken into five key sections, each targeting core responsibilities such as types of employment arrangements, National Employment Standards, ordinary hours, allowances, overtime, flexible work, and record keeping. Activities and visuals, including a comic-strip approach, were optimised for mobile, making the learning engaging and practical.

A tailored pre-assessment was created to allow experienced leaders to skip content they already understood, with assessment questions directly aligned to targeted, measurable objectives.

The development process included rigorous testing to ensure reliability, smooth navigation, and quality across all platforms.

Outcomes

The refreshed module achieved its goals, offering a seamless, scenario-driven, and engaging experience. Out of 4008 respondents, the module scored a 40 NPS, with the majority rating it highly and 89% expressing confidence in applying the knowledge to their roles.

Positive feedback praised the module’s clarity, relevance, ease of navigation, and time-saving pre-assessment. The visual and interactive design was well received, and leaders appreciated the focus on practical application. The success of the module was attributed to close client collaboration, intentional design, and a strict alignment with business strategy and learner needs.

Conclusion

The Employment Foundations module stands as a benchmark for scenario-driven, mobile-optimised learning design. It simplified complex compliance requirements, delivered measurable outcomes, and empowered leaders to confidently fulfil their employment obligations. The project’s effectiveness was demonstrated by strong participant feedback and high engagement, confirming the module’s value and relevance for its target audience.
